| Introduction |
| |
| New Delhi, located on the wide plain of the Yamuna River, is India's capital and its 3rd largest city. This dynamic city has a total area of 1,485km² and a population of 10,000,000 people. The region is divided into 2 sections; New Delhi and Old Delhi. Old Delhi was the central point for people of the Islamic faith in the 13th ~ 19th centuries. Then in 1911, New Delhi formed when the British capital was moved from Calcutta. Although New Delhi is the center of India's import/export business and government, it's economy falls behind Bombay. Old Delhi is filled with ancient monuments where New Delhi is a modern metropolis. |

The summer season is from mid-March through October and it remains warm from November through early March. It doesn't rain except for during monsoon season, which is from June through August. The temperature reaches its peak in May and June, where it can go up to 40°C. In December and January, temperatures can go down to 2~3°C. Due to the frost falling and heavy fog during the winter months, traffic can become a nightmare, not to mention delays and cancelled flights at the airport. The best time to visit New Delhi is from October through March. 14°C is the average temperature in January, and 33°C in June.
Wardrobe Tips
Light summer clothing is appropriate during the warm months about half the year. Travelers will need a light coat or sweater during the winter months. During July and August, travelers won't need any jackets, just a cool t-shirt.

| Transportation |
| |
| Bus
The buses in New Delhi connect most areas of the city, as well as outskirts or New Delhi. However, for first-time travelers the crowds and the numerous lines can get quite chaotic and confusing. Tourists are recommended to use the local tour buses: ITDC (Indian Tourism Development Company) and DTDC (Delhi Tourism Development Company). The fare runs between Rs6 ~ Rs10.
Taxi
The yellow/black colored metered taxis can be easily hailed all over New Delhi. The initial fare is Rs3.50 for the first 1.6km, then Rs2 for every additional 1km. There is an additional 20% charge after 11pm. The negative part of metered taxis is that the passenger can end up paying up to 70% more than the metered rate, and also end up dealing with the hassles of bargaining with the driver before taking off.
Airport taxis are run by a convenient ticketing system. Travelers can purchase a ticket directly from a counter at the airport, then give it to the driver along with the destination.
Tourist taxis are also available in New Delhi. The fare varies for each taxi. For example, the fares for non-air-conditioned taxis run Rs2 per 1km, approximately Rs15 per hour.
Hand-Pulled Rickshaws
The hand-pulled rickshaws, where a person pulls a cushioned passenger box, is almost extinct in India and can only be found in Calcutta. Only cycle and auto rickshaws can be found in metropolitan areas.
Cycle Rickshaws
The cycle rickshaw, where a person pedals in front of a cushioned passenger box, is used mostly for short distances. Be aware that cycle rickshaws cannot carry heavy loads and is quite slow. The fare is approximately Rs20.
Auto Rickshaws
Auto rickshaws are convenient; yet it's uncomfortable, loud, and emits a lot exhaust fumes. The initial fare is Rs1.2, and Rs2.40 per every additional 1km. However, most of them don't use the meter and most tourists have to bargain the fare.

| Sately Tips |
| |
| -Be careful of over-friendly people that target tourists in crowded places, such as the airport, bust and train stops, etc., especially in New Delhi. If you have no specific destination upon arrival, the safest place to sit and plan things out is the airport waiting room.
-Be careful of pickpockets and scammers. Because some work with the police to rip off unsuspecting travelers, avoid making contact with anyone who seems too friendly or tries to hand you something.
-People of India never accept bills that are ripped. Ironically, many people carry their bills all crumpled up, easily wearing them out. Never accept ripped bills from locals who try to scam tourists who are not aware of this practice. If this should happen, always say 'Change' and receive a good bill.
